Capital One Financial is a Fortune 500 bank holding company based in the United States that specializes in credit cards, auto and home loans, banking and savings services and products. Capital One, from its corporate headquarters in Fairfax County, Virginia, is one of the companies who pioneered the mass marketing of credit cards in the 1990?s and holds the fourth spot of the largest United States Postal Service customers with the fifth largest deposit portfolios in the nation. Capital One Financial was founded in 1988 as a spin-off of Signet Banking Corp by Richard Fairbank and Nigel Morris. Signet Banking Corp was a Virginia-based bank that was acquired in 1997 by First Union Corp. 2008 was a big year for Capital One as it not only began using the branding of Capital One Bank in March of that year, but also purchased Chevy Chase Bank for $520 million and received $3.56 billion bail-out money from the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act following the country?s economic crisis. Capital One Financial has international operations in Canada and the United Kingdom. Capital One is involved with many sports teams as a big sponsor such as the Florida Citrus Bowl where it became the principal sponsor in 2001 which was later named the Capital One Bowl as a result of the sponsorship. Capital One also sponsors the Football League Championship football clubs Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United in the United Kingdom from 2004-2009 and 2006-2008 respectively. Capital One also sponsors curling events in Canada and sponsors a mascot challenge every year during the Capital One Bowl.
